Differential geometry, as its name implies, is the study of geometry using differential calculus. It dates back to Newton and Leibniz in the seventeenth century, but it was not until the nineteenth century, with the work of Gauss on surfaces and Riemann on the curvature tensor, that differential geometry flourished and its modern foundation was laid. Differential Geometry of Manifolds takes a practical approach, containing extensive exercises and focusing on applications of differential geometry in physics, including the Hamiltonian formulation of dynamics (with a view toward symplectic manifolds), the tensorial formulation of electromagnetism, some string theory, and some fundamental concepts in general relativity. Differential geometry has become more important in the field of mathematical physics due to Einstein’s general relativity postulation that the universe is curved.
